Alkarty Perlite

Alkarty Perlite is a popular brand of perlite, a naturally occurring volcanic glass. It is mined and then heated until it expands into a lightweight, white material. This expanded perlite is used in various applications, particularly in horticulture.

Benefits of Perlite

Perlite offers several benefits, especially in gardening and horticulture:

  1. Improved Aeration: Perlite's porous structure helps improve soil aeration, allowing roots to breathe better.

  2. Enhanced Drainage: It improves water drainage, preventing soil from becoming waterlogged.

  3. Neutral pH: Perlite is pH neutral, making it suitable for a wide range of plants.

  4. Sterility: Being sterile, it prevents soil-borne diseases and pests.

  5. Lightweight: Its lightweight nature makes it easy to handle and mix with other soil components.

  6. Water Retention: Perlite can retain water while still allowing excess water to drain away, maintaining optimal moisture levels.

How to Use Perlite

Perlite can be used in various ways in gardening:

  1. Potting Mixes: Mix perlite with potting soil at a ratio of 1:1 or 1:4, depending on the plant's needs. This helps improve drainage and aeration.

  2. Seed Starting: Use perlite as a medium for starting seeds. It helps keep the seeds moist while allowing light to reach them.

  3. Rooting Cuttings: Perlite can be used alone or mixed with compost to root cuttings. Moisten the perlite, place the cuttings, and cover with a plastic bag to maintain humidity.

  4. Hydroponics: Perlite is also used in hydroponic systems to support plant growth without soil.

  5. Rooftop Gardens: Due to its lightweight nature, perlite is ideal for rooftop gardens, reducing the weight load on the structure.

It's dusty. The granules are as well tiny might be in range of 1-2mm. Few are large as well. It still is able to provide drainage and that's what mainly matters.
